Residents of Hoskera village, Shahpur taluk in Yadgir district, gathered for a celebration on Monday after they learnt that 23-year-old Vaishali had topped her class in the second pre-university examination. The visually impaired student of Government Independent PU College, Agara, secured 92.66%.

Her parents distributed doodh peda to almost all the households in their village. Her father works as a driver in KSRTC and her mother is a homemaker. She has five siblings.

“I was provided accommodation in Bengaluru by an NGO that helped me get Braille textbooks and other aids,” she said. “I would record all the important lectures so that I could listen to them again,” she added.

She had come to Bengaluru to join a computer training programme, but was counselled to pursue academics. Vaishali wants to pursue a Masters in arts and aspires to be a lecturer.
