‘It is the Congress that fights the BJP’

Exhorting supporters of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] to vote for the United Democratic Front (UDF) in this general election, senior Congress leader A.K. Antony said this is a fight to bring down the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He was speaking at a campaign rally for Hibi Eden.

It is the Congress, and not the CPI(M), that is fighting the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) nationally, said the former Chief Minister. “This is no ordinary election, because it is to save the idea of India for what it stands for. It is nothing less than a Kurukshetra War,” he said. “The five-year Modi rule has taken a toll on the country’s democratic institutions and has disturbed the social fabric of the country which takes pride in its unity in diversity,” he added.

Calling Mr. Modi a ‘best actor’, Mr. Antony urged people to see through the ‘theatrics’ enacted by Mr. Modi, especially with regard to Sabarimala. “Both Mr. Modi and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan are responsible for making the State a battleground. Mr. Modi told people that he would protect their faith if he is elected again. Then why he failed to act when the situation demanded,” Mr. Antony asked.
