Indore: 85 percent physiotherapists in IPL are Indians, claims IAP

Indore: Indian Association of Physiotherapists (IAP) here on Sunday claimed that nearly 85 per cent of physiotherapists in Indian Premier League (IPL) are Indians.  “There is a wrong perception that most physiotherapists severing IPL players are foreigners.  Their percentage is not more than 15. Rest all are Indian physiotherapists,” IAP executive president Sanjiv K Jha said during a media session of 1st IAP Corporate Conference, which concluded on Sunday. The two-day conference saw physiotherapists across the country.

“There has been a long standing demand of IAP regarding formation of Physiotherapy Council of India (PCI). In our two-day deliberation, it turned out to be one of our main demands,” said IAP conference organising secretary Anand Misra. He said they also felt need of creating awareness among people regarding importance of physiotherapy in treating physical disabilities.  Some senior doctors, including DK Taneja, Apoorva Pauranik, Arun Agrawal, VV Kadkarni, Pranav Ghodgaonkar and Sunil Dubey also participated in panel discussions and underlined the role of physiotherapists in health sector.

Terming orthopedics and physiotherapy as “siblings”, Taneja stated that 80 per cent success of orthopedic surgery hinges on a good physiotherapist. Pauranik stated that it’s very important for a patient requiring physiotherapy to see physiotherapist and complete the recommended course.  Other doctors also highlighted the importance of physiotherapy in medical sector and suggested to raise awareness among patients.  Jha stated that after deliberating for two days, they have decided to prepare a draft, which will be submitted to union government with a request to accept recommendations made in it for a healthier India.
