Starting Monday, motorists proceeding to Udhagamandalam from Mettupalayam will be allowed only through the Mettupalayam-Coonoor-Udhagamandalam Road, while people proceeding from Udhagamandalam to Mettupalayam will have to take the Kotagiri Road.
In a press release, the Nilgiris district police said that the restrictions will be in place till May 31, 2019.
The police said that vehicles proceeding to Mettupalayam will not be allowed via Burliar, and that vehicles from Coonoor heading towards Mettupalayam too will have to proceed to Kotagiri and then head towards Mettupalayam. The police said that the road diversions are in place to ensure that traffic does not grind to a halt along the two routes, with the number of tourists visiting the Nilgiris on the increase in the last couple of weeks.
Lorries and trucks will also not be allowed along the Mettupalayam-Coonoor-Udhagamandalam and Kotagiri Roads between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m., the police announced.
