Melbourne commuters are facing major delays after a woman was tragically killed when she fell on the train tracks during peak-hour. 

Buses replaced trains on the Sandringham line after a woman was fatally struck in Hampton, south-east of the CBD, on Monday afternoon. 

Passengers lined up for buses at Flinders Street Station amid the lengthy delays.

Photos show scores of workers bunched together as they desperately try to get themselves home. 

Metro Trains urged commuters to consider alternative transport following the accident. 

'Plan ahead for your trip home if you usually take the Sandringham line,' Metro Trains tweeted.

'Services have been affected due to a person being hit by a train.'

'Our engineers will keep an eye on the roads and tweak traffic lights to help replacement buses get where they need to.' 

Trains services resumed between Flinders Street and Sandringham at about 6.30pm but commuters continue to face major delays.

'We are anticipating delays as we recover the timetable,' Metro Trains said. 

Passengers travelling between Elsternwick and Sandringham were advised to take a replacement bus from the Arts Centre.

Those between Ripponlea and South Yarra were also told to take a replacement bus or catch the Yarra Trams route 58. 

There is little known about the incident but the death is understood to have been an accident.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
