LUCKNOW: More than half of the new Metro stations to come up in the second phase are going to be underground.
On the proposed 11.2km east-west corridor of Lucknow Metro from Charbagh to Vasantkunj, seven of 12 stations will be underground.

While a 4.3km stretch of the corridor will be elevated, 6.9km will be underground.

The plan was finalized by Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC) on Monday after studying a recent assessment report which stated that the stretch was on a highway with high traffic flow and less availability of land for stations.

The survey also assessed that the number of passengers on the corridor will be around 60,000, which is less than 80,000 projected earlier in the detailed project report. As a result, LMRC has decided to run trains with three coaches instead of four as planned earlier. The elevated stations of the E-W corridor will be Vasantkunj, Musabagh, Sarfarazganj and Balaganj, while underground stations will be Thakurganj, Nawazganj, Medical College crossing, City railway station, Pandeyganj, Aminabad and Gautam Buddha Marg.

Stations constructed on the E-W corridor would be smaller in size compared to the north-south corridor. The elevated structures would be built using single-pillar technology and lighter via ducts will be used.

Land required for the construction of E-W corridor is around 43 acre. Of this, 36 acre is government-owned and the rest is owned by private individuals. The proposed cost of the project assessed by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is Rs 4,538 crore. The E-W corridor is likely to be completed by September 2023, provided it gets approval from the Centre this year.
