BAREILLY: A 24-year-old girl committed suicide by consuming poison at her residence in Daulatapur village under Bheera block in Lakhimpur Kheri district after her marriage, which was scheduled on April 17, was cancelled due to threat calls made by her stalkers on fiancé phone.

After Kavita Singh was found dead in her room on Saturday night, an FIR was registered at Bheera police station against her alleged stalkers Mohammed Salman and his brother Sultan under section 306 (abetment of suicide) under the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Both the accused have been absconding and police are searching for them.

Police said autopsy on the body was conducted on Sunday, while the report is awaited.

Victim’s father Mohar Singh said, “My daughter’s wedding was cancelled as police did not take action against the stalkers who were threatening her fiancé and his family over phone. I had lodged a complaint with Kheri senior superintendent of police, circle officer and SHO, but no action was taken.”

However, station house officer (SHO) of Bheera police station Anil Kumar told TOI, “The threat calls were received by victim’s fiancé in Udham Singh Nagar in Uttarakhand, which is out of our jurisdiction. We have registered an FIR against Samlam and Sultan, who live in the locality of the victim. They will be arrested soon.”

In another incident, a 16-year-old girl allegedly set herself afire after her marriage could not be fixed with the boy she was in a relationship as her family could not arrange money to buy an SUV demanded by the boy in Kheri district. The girl succumbed to her injuries on Saturday night, a fortnight after she had immolated self.

An FIR under sections 306 (abetment of suicide) and 511 (punishment for attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonment for life or other imprisonment) of IPC was registered against the boy, Mohammed Jeeshan (21), who is yet to be arrested.

In third incident, Naina Devi (28) was found dead under mysterious circumstances in her house in Ayodhyapur village under Hyderabad police station in Kheri district on Saturday midnight.

Victim’s parents accused her husband Jai Ram of poisoning her to death so that he could marry another woman.

Till the time of filing this report, an autopsy was conducted and police said they were in the process of registering a case against the husband on complaint of victim’s brother Pappu.
