Vadodara: The dispute over seating arrangement for lawyers in the district court building only looks to be stretching.
A major row erupted in the district court building on Monday morning when the president of Baroda Bar Association (BBA) Hasmukh Bhatt was detained for trying to place a table in the court lobby. Later during the day, the lawyers’ body declared indefinite boycott of court proceedings until the seating arrangement issue is resolved.
On Monday noon, Bhatt and some other advocates made attempts to enter the room on the ground floor near gate 2 of the court building, but were stopped by cops. Advocates had announced on Sunday about placing tables in the lobby of the court building following which police force in large number was deployed in the district court complex in Diwalipura. When Bhatt insisted that he be allowed to get tables out in the lobby or be taken into custody, he was detained and taken to Gotri police station.
After Bhatt’s detention, the committee members of BBA called an urgent meeting and decided to indefinitely boycott court proceedings. The committee passed a resolution in which it was stated that despite writing 30 letters for allocating extra rooms nothing was done about it. “On April 12, when the president of BBA and some other lawyers placed tables in the lobby without creating hindrance to anyone yet the police were called and on Monday the president was detained like a criminal,” the resolution read.
Besides boycotting the court proceedings, the lawyers will also boycott the orientation program and the upcoming Lok Adalat organized by the legal department.
