A former Sub-Inspector of Police, Babu, 45, and his friend C. Kalaiselvi, 35, were killed when an unidentified vehicle knocked down the motorcycle they were riding near Thuvariman on Sunday night.
Police said Babu, who was relieved on compulsory retirement from Madurai district police, was riding the bike near the Thuvariman bridge around 8 p.m. when the accident occurred.
While Kalaiselvi of Bethaniapuram was killed on the spot, Babu died on the way to Government Rajaji Hospital. Samayanallur police have registered a case.
In another accident reported at Arasaradi, I. Noornisha, 34, of Goripalayam was killed when a TNSTC bus hit the two-wheeler on which she was riding pillion on Monday.
Police said the woman, along with her relative K. Rahmatullah, 24, was going to a finance company at Kalavasal when the bus hit the motorcycle from behind. The woman fell down on the road and came under the rear wheel of the bus.
The city police have picked up bus driver S. Palanivel, 47.
