The new quorated South African Broadcasting Corporation Board will have to decide the fate of the broadcaster’s chief operating officer Chris Maroleng, after an internal disciplinary process found him guilty of breaching his fiduciary duties.
City Press reported on Sunday that Maroleng ran the risk of being dismissed after a disciplinary inquiry which began late last year found him guilty of three charges that also included gross negligence.
The main allegation against Maroleng, according to City Press, is that he protected the company's former group executive for sport Marcia Mahlalela, who quit before she was about to face a disciplinary inquiry over her appointment of Robert Marawa to SABC radio allegedly without following due process.
Maroleng is accused of writing a letter to the South African Rugby Union exonerating Mahlalela of the accusations against her, saying the SABC considered the accusations against her unsubstantiated.
Last week the Presidency announced that President Cyril Ramaphosa had signed off on the appointment of eight new board members, helping the SABC board meet the quorum which it needs to act.
The new board members' began performing their roles immediately upon Ramaphosa's sign-off.
SABC spokesperson Vuyo Mthembu told Fin24 that while she could not share the details of the disciplinary inquiry, it is expected that Maroleng’s fate will be one of the first things that the board will have to decide.
"I don’t have information at hand in terms of how much time it will take for the new board to decide on the Maroleng matter. I can’t talk to the final details, but the recommendations will be handed to the board as soon as they officially start," said Mthembu.
The eight members joining the board are Mary Papayya, Jasmina Patel, Advocate Motshedi Benjamin Lekalakala, Professor Saths Cooper, Dr Marcia Socikwa, Mamoduphi Mohlala-Mulaudzi, Bernedette Muthien and David Maimela.
