FEROZEPUR: Over a month later, the Ferozepur police have failed to arrest the accused who attacked the city police SHO and injured other cops and managed to free another accused from the police station.
On March 9, a police team led by DSP Surinder Bansal was checking vehicles at a Namdev Chowk check-post when the cops stopped a car and the occupants reportedly misbehaved with the cops and threatened them of dire consequences. The police claimed that the car occupants were the close aides of the local Congress MLA. The police, however, detained one Ritik Abrol.
As Ritik’s kin came to know of his detention, they barged into the city police station and attacked the cops on duty with base bats and sticks causing injuries to constables Gurpreet Singh, Surjit Singh and SHO Chander Shekhar. The mob also forcibly got the youth freed before fleeing.
On the SHO’s statement, a case under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 186 (Obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions) and 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon) of the IPC was registered against Ritik Kumar, Rishi, Rakesh Kumar, Paramjit Singh and 15 to 20 unidentified persons.
Ferozepur SSP Sandip Goyal could not be contacted on the issue. DSP Surinder Bansal said he is not authorised to comment on the issue as the matter is being supervised by higher officials.
