NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet on Monday approved Rs 4,315.15 crore for the implementation of 10% reservation for economically weaker sections (EWS) from among the general category, paving the way for the creation of two lakh additional seats across 158 centrally funded higher education institutions.
The Cabinet chaired by PM Narendra Modi approved the provisions of reservations for EWS students in central educational institutions after the EC’s nod, which was needed as the model code of conduct is in force. “With this Cabinet approval, a total of 2,14,766 additional seats will be created. While 1,19,983 additional seats will be created during 2019-20 academic session, 95,783 seats will be added in 2020-21,” said an official.
The Rajya Sabha had on January 9 approved amending the Constitution to provide 10% EWS quota.
