2020 Audi S5 Getting A Sporty Makeover, Could Pack Diesel Power

Audi is working on a minor facelift for the A5 lineup and now we’re getting our first glimpse of the updated S5 Coupe.

Recently spotted undergoing testing, the facelifted S5 has a modestly revised front bumper which features triangular air intakes. The grille is also new and it now has honeycomb mesh inserts which give the model a more aggressive appearance. The headlights have also been updated, but they retain the same shape as their predecessors.

Styling changes are less noticeable out back, but the images suggest the S5 will have a new rear bumper. We can also see revised side skirts and a familiar four-tailpipe exhaust system.

Spy photographers didn’t get close enough to take interior pictures, but the cabin could see a number of updates. However, details are limited and it remains unclear if the S5 will adopt the triple screen setup used by the S6 and S7.

The current S5 has a 3.0-liter TSFI V6 engine that produces 349 hp (260 kW / 354 PS) and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque. It is connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission which sends power to a quattro all-wheel drive system. This enables the coupe to accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 4.4 seconds before hitting a limited top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h).

The engine will likely carryover, but a previous report has suggested it could be joined by the 3.0-liter TDI V6 that powers the SQ5 TDI. It produces 342 hp (225 kW / 347 hp) and 516 lb-ft (700 Nm) of torque.

The diesel engine hasn’t been confirmed for the S5, but the 2020 S6 and S7 have a 3.0-liter TDI V6 engine with 344 hp (257 kW / 349 PS) and 516 lb-ft (700 Nm) of torque. However, non European models get a more traditional 2.9-liter TSFI V6 that develops 444 hp (331 kW / 450 PS) and 443 lb-ft (600 Nm) of torque.
