The Gamdevi police on Friday arrested a man and his son duo for assaulting an on-duty Traffic Police constable after he tried to penalise them for violating traffic rules.

According to the Gamdevi police, the incident occurred at around 8 p.m. on Forgit Street in Grant Road on Friday. The police said that Police Constable S. Sanap, attached with the Tardeo Traffic Division, was on duty at the spot and saw a car enter the no-entry lane.

“Mr. Sanap stopped the car and was issuing a challan when the occupants of the car came out and started assaulting him,” Mumbai Police spokesperson DCP Manjunath Singe said.

The commotion attracted the attention of some passersby and local shopkeepers, who rushed to help Mr. Sanap. Some of them took videos of the incident, and one such video, which later went viral on social media, shows both the accused repeatedly getting aggressive, even as passersby are trying to restrain them.

Meanwhile, some eye witnesses called the police control room and the Gamdevi police rushed a team to the spot.

“The accused were still at the spot when our personnel got there. Both were taken into custody. After completing necessary inquiries, they were both placed under arrest and charged with assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty, intentional insult to provoke breach of peace and criminal intimidation under the Indian Penal Code along with relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act,” senior police inspector Gokulsingh Patil of Gamdevi police station said.

The accused, identified as Jay Munwani, a businessman, and his son Jashan, were subsequently produced in court on Saturday and remanded in police custody till Monday. They reside in the same area, Mr. Patil said.
