With just a day left for campaigning for Lok Sabha election, the exercise has reached its peak in Tiruchi constituency.
While Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami campaigned for DMDK candidate V. Elangovan, a few days ago, Opposition leader and DMK president M.K. Stalin participated in a public meeting at Uzhavar Sandhai ground on Saturday and sought votes for Congress candidate V. Thirunavukarasar. For Sarubala R. Tondaiman, AMMK deputy general secretary T.T.V. Dhinakaran spoke at Srirangam and Palakkarai a few days go. DMDK treasurer Premalatha Vijaykant also canvassed votes for Mr. Elangovan at a few places in the city recently.
Makkal Needhi Maiam founder and actor Kamal Hassan will visit Tiruchi on Monday to seek votes for its candidate Anandaraja. Mr. Kamal Hassan is expected to speak at a few places from his campaign vehicle.
The campaign will come to a close at 5 p.m. on Tuesday. The leaders have just a day left to reach out to the voters. Since no candidate or political party will be allowed to carry out any form of campaigning after 5 p.m., the candidates and leaders took out a whirlwind tour on Sunday. All of them concentrated on covering the left-out areas in Tiruchi (west), Tiruchi (east), Srirangam, Thiruverumbur, Gandarvakottai and Pudukottai Assembly segments.
Mr. Thirunavukarasar, accompanied by former DMK Minister K.N. Nehru, campaigned at Cantonment area on Sunday morning. Standing on an open vehicle, the Congress candidate reached out to the voters street after street. He promised more support for the ancillary units of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL). Early completion of Aristo Roundabout bridge and improving road and air connectivity are among his major promises to the voters.
DMDK candidate Elangovan, who canvassed votes in Gandarvakottai on Saturday, turned his attention to the city on Sunday. Accompanied by sitting MP P. Kumar, Mr. Elangovan took out a motorcycle rally in Golden Rock area. A large number of AIADMK, DMDK, BJP, TMC and other alliance partners participated in it.
AMMK candidate Sarubala Tondaiman visited various areas in Thiruvanaikoil and Srirangam on Sunday, seeking votes for her gift box symbol. Travelling on an open vehicle, she met voters at Burma Colony, Gandhi Road, Sannathi Street, Narian Street and others.
Candidates of political parties are expected to take out motorcycle rallies on Tuesday to end their campaign.
