MASTERMIND
Series premiere ★★★
6pm, SBS
Resurrecting this timeless British quiz show that has sadly lain dormant in Australia since the Huw Evans-fronted version wound up in 1984, is former Book Club host, Jennifer Byrne. One of the few women to host this format worldwide, Byrne will grill contestants on specialist subjects including Australian parrots, the Dismissal, and women in Australian rally sport. But will 21st century brainiacs cope without multiple-choice answers or phoning a friend?
DANCING WITH THE STARS
★★★
7.30pm, Ten
And then were four. The competition heats up as the remaining contestants burn up the parquetry in this semi-final round comprising a judges’ choice of genre and a freestyle routine. They’ll have to work, hard, though, to outshine the new hosting duo of Amanda Keller in her fine collection of glittery pantsuits, and eliminated contestant, Denise Scott, the genius choice of replacement for Grant Denyer after he was laid off with a bad back.
YOUNG SHELDON
★★★★
7.30pm, Nine and 9Now
This cute retro sitcom about the boyhood of The Big Bang Theory’s protagonist is about so much more than his quirks. Here, his objection to the industrialisation of his favourite brand of bread is the catalyst for a hilarious jab at Cold War Commie phobia, in which every member of the family ensemble is involved. The incredible talent of child star Iain Armitage never fails to astound.
