PUNE: A 30-year-old software engineer — wearing a helmet — escaped with a fracture and other injuries after he rammed his motorcycle into a parked tempo at Khadi Machine Chowk in Kondhwa.
The accident had occurred around 12.45am on April 4. The police have booked the tempo driver and seized his vehicle, as he had not switched on the hazard lights.
Prashant Nalawade was on his way home, when he crashed into the tempo, parked by the side of the road. Resurfacing work is on progress on a stretch of the Katraj-Dehu Road bypass here.
“Nalawade suffered injuries on his head and face and also fractured his left hand. He did not suffer a grievous injury on his head, as he was wearing a good-quality helmet,” police havaldar Yashwant Gandale from the Bharati Vidyapeeth police said.
He was undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit of a private hospital at Katraj and was not in a position to talk for a few days. “We recorded his statement after he was shifted to the general ward on April 9. We have booked the tempo driver, Kirodhar Mahato (27), and seized his vehicle. He will be arrested and a chargesheet will be filed against him,” Gandale said.
In his FIR, Nalawade said he had boarded the IT company bus from Hinjewadi and alighted at the Katraj Chowk. He then collected his motorcycle parked at ICICI Bank corner and was riding home.
Nalwade told police that the bypass was being resurfaced, so he rode his bike towards the side of the road. He stated that he did not notice the tempo in the darkness and crashed into it.
The workers at the spot and passers-by alerted the city police control room and, before the beat marshals could reach the spot, rushed Nalawade to a nearby private hospital in an autorickshaw, police said.
“Investigations have revealed that the driver of the tempo did not take precautionary measures, like switching on hazard lights, installing barricades and displaying a signboard warning motorists of the parked vehicle. The incident could have been averted if he had taken these measures,” Gandale added.
