One arrested, two other accused absconding: cops

A security guard has foiled a burglary bid by a group in Vasant Kunj, the police said on Saturday. The guard is enrolled in Delhi Police Prahari Scheme, they said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-West) Devender Arya said that the guard, B.D. Prasad was on duty at Vasant Kunj’s C-9 Block on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday when he saw two-three persons roaming suspiciously in the area.

Informed beat staff

“The moment he tried to stop them, they ran away. He immediately informed the beat officer and shared their descriptions,” Mr. Arya said.

Prahari Scheme encourages its members to share informations related to suspicious persons, activity or regarding any crime or criminal.

After the information was shared by Mr. Prasad, a team was constituted and deployed on a police picket on Nelson Mandela Marg.

The staff noticed a car, which had three occupants, and stopped it. When an officer walked towards them, the three of them tried to run away on foot, leaving their car behind, but one of them got caught.

The two other accused, however, managed to flee, the police said, adding that the arrested accused was later identified as Sheikh Rahim, a resident of Jahangirpuri.

During interrogation, Rahim told the police that he and his accomplices Mangal and Monu had come to Vasant Kunj to commit burglary and that they have done it in the past as well.

With Rahim’s arrest, the police claimed to have solved five cases of theft and burglary.

“Rahim used different names to confuse the police so and evade arrest for previous involvement in similar cases,” Mr. Arya also said.
