MUMBAI: The countdown to the close of Lent began at Palm Sunday April 14. A few churches led processions with palm leaves followed by special mass. Oswald Cardinal Gracias, archbishop of Bombay, called upon Catholics to alleviate suffering and injustice.
Palm Sunday marks the start of Holy Week which leads on to Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, the day of Jesus Christ's crucifixion. Easter will be celebrated April 21.
"On Palm Sunday, palms are blessed and distributed in remembrance of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem," said Fr Nigel Barrett, spokesman for the archdiocese of Bombay.
Cardinal Gracias had this message for the faithful who gathered at Holy Name School in Colaba. At the mass that followed the procession of palms, he said, "This day is a reminder that much more must be done to alleviate suffering and injustice."
The Centenary Methodist Gujarati Church in Grant Road was decorated with palm leaves. "The message behind this is to welcome Christ in our hearts. Major Dinesh B Macwan was guest speaker," said pastor Rev. Bharat Solanki.
