PUNE: The Yerawada police on Saturday arrested a 31-year-old man for sexually assaulting a nine-year-old girl, the daughter of his neighbour, in their residential building in the afternoon when she was playing with her friend.

A probe revealed that the suspect had molested her last year too. The suspect has been arrested under sections 377 (unnatural offence), 354-A (sexual harassment) of the Indian Penal Code and the relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

An officer from the Yerawada police told TOI that on Saturday around 11am, the girl and her friend were playing on the premises of their building. The suspect called the girl. Her friend fled from there. “The suspect then molested the girl by touching her improperly,” the officer said adding, “The incident came to light when the girl’s mother noticed her and raised an alarm.”

The girl’s mother immediately approached the police and lodged a complaint. “During counselling, the girl revealed that last summer, the suspect had touched her improperly and indulged in unnatural sex with her. She did not tell her parents as the suspect had threatened to kill her brother,” the officer sad.

The police are investigating if the suspect had sexually assaulted other minor girls, the officer said.
