Gurgaon: A toll collector at the Kherki Daula toll plaza on the Gurgaon-Jaipur highway became the victim of a road rage attack on Saturday afternoon. Arun Kumar (25) tried to intercept an SUV whose driver was making a getaway without paying toll. But the driver did not stop. Instead, he drove the SUV into Kumar, who fell on the bonnet. With the SUV still not stopping, Kumar clung on for dear life and was allegedly carried nearly 3km like that.
Cameras at the toll plaza have captured the incident that happened around 12.50pm on Saturday.
After the SUV, an Innova, came to a halt, the duo in the vehicle allegedly thrashed Kumar and threatened him against filing a police complaint. Kumar, who is UP’s Muzaffarnagar, has lodged a complaint at Kherki Daula police station. Police said the owner of the Innova (HR 55 S 3827) has been identified as Suchit, a resident of Hari Nagar.
“The miscreants took Lane No. 26 and drove through the barrier in order to flee,” Kumar said in his complaint. “To stop them, I stood in front of the car but the driver did not stop. In an impulsive reaction to save myself, I jumped and clung to the car’s bonnet. The accused, however, kept on driving. They drove towards Manesar for about 3km. After they finally stopped the car, they thrashed me and asked me to never ask for toll tax for their car,” he added.
The toll plaza manager called police, who have traced the car’s owner. The complainant has confirmed that Suchit was driving the car and there was another man with him, who is yet to be identified. When contacted, Rajender Singh Dalal, ACP (Manesar), said, “The owner of the car has been identified and will be arrested soon.”
An FIR was registered under IPC sections 279 (negligent driving), 307 (attempt to murder), 323 (causing hurt) and 506 (criminal intimidation) at the Kherki Daula police station on Saturday. “Bad behaviour and brashness have become an everyday affair at the toll plaza. Of late, there have been attempts to harm officials trying to do their duty,” said Rajender Bhati, project head of Kherki Daula toll plaza.
