No, you haven’t got your World War II history wrong. This is an alternate universe in which Britain was occupied by the Nazis in 1941. Based on the novel by Len Deighton, this sexy espionage thriller starring Sam Riley and Kate Bosworth concerns a resistance movement and a black-market murder, with lots of fervent, innuendo-laden conversations breathed in alleyways and darkened corners of smoky pubs. It’s certainly an inventive take on the war drama.

The way in which this sitcom couple deals with serious issues (alcoholism, kleptomania) makes a refreshing change in an earnest world in which misery memoirs are the preferred holiday reading for the masses. Good old humour, the blacker the better, is the salve here, and it makes for some hysterical moments in the lives of Rob (American comic Rob Delaney) and Briton, Sharon Horgan (Women on the Verge), as they navigate their troubles, their children, and each other.

As if the humidity, the hormones and the alcohol weren’t messing enough with the pretty young heads in this perverse offshore detention program for the dateless and desperate, host Osher Gunsberg (pictured) confuses them further by introducing another woman to the group. At the same time, one of the men appears to have escaped the compound, at least for the night. Lucky him.
