NEW DELHI: Two traffic policemen were chased and attacked by some youths they had stopped for riding their scooter without helmets on the wrong side of the road at Nangli Dairy in south-west Delhi. When the cops tried to evade their pursuers in a DTC bus, the group damaged it, dragged out the policemen and thrashed them. Four days after the assault, police managed to nab one of the youths on Saturday.
Assistant sub-inspector Ishwar Singh and constable Kamal of Delhi Traffic Police were posted at the Ghasipura picket on Najafgarh Road on Wednesday and stopped two youths who were not only without their helmets but also on the wrong side of the carriageway. When the cops asked them about the violations, the two replied that they were locals and the rules did not apply to them.
After the policemen impounded their scooter, one of the youths, Sanjay, said he would get the money for the fine and his driving licence from home and left. His friend Vikas remained behind. Sometime later, Sanjay returned with two other men and the four began assaulting the two cops.
Seeking to save themselves, the policemen climbed into a DTC bus, but the youths pelted stones at the bus, smashed its windshield and forced the driver to stop. They entered the bus, where they cornered the cops and thrashed them. The quartet then fled to the colony nearby.
“We received a complaint from the traffic police and a team led by SHO Sunil Kumar began investigations,” said Anto Alphonse, DCP (Dwarka). The team tracked down Sanjay from the description given by the two victims. He and his friends have been charged with assaulting a public servant to prevent him from conducting his duty, damaging public property, criminal intimidation and conspiracy.
