Sundowns march into Champs League SFs at Al Ahly's expense

2019-04-13 20:57

Cape Town - Mamelodi Sundowns marched into the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League after seeing off Egyptian giants Al Ahly 5-1 on aggregate.

There was a surprise in terms of selection with Oupa Manyisa coming into the line-up ahead of Gaston Sirino, who was named as a substitute. It seemed Manyisa was picked in order to keep possession for the Brazilians.

The hosts dominated the opening 20 minutes as Sundowns struggled to get going. In the 17th minute Walid Azaro's curling strike rattled the woodwork with Denis Onyango panicking.

Azaro was proving to be a real menace and in the 30th minute he forced Onyango into an acrobatic save. Not long afterwards Ramadan Sobhi's right-footed strike was palmed away by the goalkeeper as well.

The away outfit were restricted to efforts from distance as Lebogang Maboe and Hlompho Kekana tested Mohamed El-Shenawy in goal.

After the break, the action was perhaps less frenetic as Sundowns once again settled into a firm defensive block.

Phakamani Mahlambi was later in the stanza introduced for Lebohang Maboe - as the former once again faced his old employers.

With that said, Azaro did manage to break the deadlock in the 68th minute as he turned home Sobhi's cross from the right-hand side.

There were no more major scares as Sundowns marched on proudly into the semi-finals of the competition. After having won the first leg tie 5-0 in Pretoria, it was an easy 5-1 victory on aggregate to coach Pitso Mosimane's side.
