Surat: A syndicate member of Veer Narmad South Gujarat University (VNSGU) on Friday wrote to Gujarat governor, who is also chancellor of the university, to cancel recent appointments of some members of faculty of architecture department as they had been recruited in violation of norms.
Sanjay Desai has claimed in his letter that no governor’s nominee was made member of the selection committee which was necessary as per the rules and hence wanted termination of all the appointments recently made in the architecture department of the university.
“The university officials not only violated the rules, but also lied to the governor’s office. It is mentioned in the letter of governor’s office that the university officials had given an oral assurance to it that the rules permit them to conduct interviews in the absence of a nominee of the governor,” Desai told TOI.
Desai has quoted from an ordinance and its sub-sections, which state that an academician, who was nominee of the chancellor, must be a part of the selection committee. “Vice- chancellor Shivendra Gupta had set up the committee without taking the syndicate into confidence, so as to select persons of his own choice to the department,” Desai added.
VNSGU sources informed that a subject expert was forced to remain present. The subject expert was asked to be a member of the interview panel on the morning of the day when the interviews were to be held.
“All due procedures were strictly followed in the appointments made in the architecture department. The representation made to the governor by the syndicate member is false,” vice-chancellor Shivendra Gupta said.
“The governor’s nominee couldn’t come on two previous attempts. Thus, we took approval from the governor’s office to conduct interviews in the absence of the governor’s nominee as per the rules. It is permissible to hold interviews if there was quorum,” said Gupta. He claimed that it was necessary to make the appointments since an inspection committee was scheduled to visit the department.
