LUCKNOW: Mercury rose further on Saturday, crossing 40 degrees Celsius mark for the first time in the city this summer. No relief is likely as met department has predicted possibilities of maximum temperature rising to 42 degrees Celsius on Sunday.

The maximum temperature on Friday was 39.5 degrees Celsius, which rose by a degree on Saturday to 40.5 degrees Celsius, two degrees above normal. The night was also hot with minimum temperatures 23.9 degrees Celsius, three degrees above normal. Relative humidity was between 19% and 52% during the day, which made weather a bit sultry.

Last year, highest maximum temperature in the month of April was 40.7 degrees Celsius recorded on April 16 and in 2017, it was 41.8 degrees Celsius on April 19. This year, heat is expected to cross the record set in 2017. On Sunday and Monday, sky would be clear and maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to be around 42 and 23 degrees Celsius, respectively.

State Met director JP Gupta said that northwesterly dry winds coming from desert region of Rajasthan are responsible for the spike in temperatures. Similar conditions will continue till Monday.

However, a strong western disturbance (WD) is expected to hit Himalayas on Tuesday. It may cause thunderstorm in many parts of the state. Rains accompanied by thunder and high-velocity winds measuring upto 60 km per hour may lash Lucknow as well.
