Tasmac shops in Chennai to be shut from April 16 till polling day

Ahead of the Lok Sabha elections and bypolls to 18 Assembly constituencies on April 18, State-run liquor shops will remain closed for three days, from April 16 till polling day.

“In view of the elections, the liquor shops will remain closed from 10 a.m. on April 16 till 12 in the night on April 18,” Chief Electoral Officer Satyabrata Sahoo told reporters here.

During surveillance so far, cash to the tune of ₹128 crore, 989 kg of gold estimated at ₹280 crore and ₹2 crore worth silver had been seized, he said.

Liquor valued at ₹34.43 lakh and laptops, cookers, sarees and clothes, all valued at ₹7.77 crore, were among the total seizures worth ₹420.87 crore, he added.

Complaints through app

Of the 2,159 complaints received through cVIGIL mobile-based application, action was taken on 946 complaints. As many as 1,181 of them had been dismissed and 32 were still pending, he said.

Over 6,000 zonal teams were functioning across the State for surveillance and each of them would cover 10 to 12 polling stations, he added.
