AHMEDABAD: In a tragic incident, a CISF jawan who was on night duty at the city airport died when his AK-47 rifle went off at the time he was depositing it on Friday morning. The rifle of CISF constable Yogesh Yadav, 35, triggered off by accident and five bullets hit Yadav in his shoulder and chest. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was declared brought dead. Police sources said Yadav had been posted at the airport for around two years.
“Yadav, a resident of Meghaninagar, hails from Mudedo village of Uttar Pradesh and is survived by his wife and two children,” said inspector P G Sarvaiya of Airport police station.
The staccato of firing bullets spread momentary panic at the city airport with passengers running and ducking for safety. A passenger said people were more worried as there had been a recent alert about possible terror attacks at airports across the country.
Airport authorities, who did not provide in-depth details of the incident, said they and the local police had brought the situation under control and had informed passengers without delay that the firing was accidental and there was no further cause for worry.
Police said they have registered a case of accidental death and have taken custody of the weapon to learn how it had gone off accidentally. “We will submit the report soon to higher authorities,” said a police official.
