Belgium opens honorary consulate in city

Appoints Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories CEO G.V. Prasad as honorary consul

Belgium has appointed Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories co-chairman and CEO G.V. Prasad as the honorary consul in Hyderabad. With that, Belgium also announced the commencement of operations of the honorary consulate in the city for Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

Mr. Prasad formally took charge at a glittering ceremony here on Friday, with the Belgian Minister for Digital Agenda, Telecom and Postal Services Philippe De Backer handing over the appointment order to him. Belgium Ambassador François Delhaye and the Consul-General in Chennai Mark Van de Vreken were also present.

On the occasion, Mr. Backer said, “We find synergies between the States of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh and Belgium. We will work towards deepening the socio-economic relations to the benefit of both the States with a focus on R&D, pharma and life sciences, IT and technology-focused trade”.

Mr. Delhaye said opening of the honorary consulate and appointment of Mr. Prasad would prove to be an excellent initiative towards strengthening of ties with southern India and Hyderabad. The Ambassador said Mr. Prasad was recognised for his accomplishment as a businessman as well as for his integrity, quality and charity work. In his acceptance speech, Mr. Prasad said the appointment was a personal honour and privilege and he would do his best to promote the interests of Belgian citizens and Belgium in India. “With globalisation here to stay, we all have to work with each other and the more we understand each other the better we will all be,” he said. Leaders of industry from the city, trade representatives of the Flanders, Walloon and Brussels region and the representative of the port of Antwerp participated in the function, a release said.
