NAVI MUMBAI: Two youths were injured — one of them is in a serious condition — after a portion of the 15-year-old foot over-bridge (FOB) near the pump house at the Mini Seashore in Vashi Sector-8 suddenly collapsed on Thursday around 7.45pm. Cousins Sarvesh (21) and Jitendra Pal (23), who fell on the rocks beneath the FOB, have been admitted to the trauma care centre at NMMC Hospital. They work at a hotel in Vashi.
The incident brings back grim memories of the CSMT FOB collapse in March, which has claimed seven lives.
“Sarvesh is critical as he has sustained internal injuries to his lungs. A CT scan of his chest and abdomen is being done and he will be kept under observation for 24 hours,” said Dr Prashant Jawade, medical superintendent of NMMC Hospital. “Jitendra has sustained severe skull injuries and administered multiple sutures. Even his head CT scan will be done.”
Jitendra told TOI: “Sarvesh and I were walking on the bridge when suddenly the base gave way. Before we realised what happened, we both fell 10-15 ft on the rocks below.” The victims’ uncle Deepak Singh Pal said: “My nephews work with me at Hotel Taste of Punjab in Satra Plaza. As they had a holiday on Thursday, they went to Mini Seashore when the mishap occurred.”
Vashi police senior inspector Anil Deshmukh said, “We have registered an FIR for negligence causing injury to the victims against the civic officials concerned.”
Local corporator Divya Gaikwad demanded that an FIR also be lodged against NMMC officials responsible for not conducting structural audit of the FOB. “The wall next to the pump house is also in a dilapidated state and needs urgent repairs,” Gaikwad said. But NMMC executive engineer Arvind Shinde told TOI: “The metal bridge is probably around 15 years old and a structural audit of the FOB was not necessitated till date as it is not very old.”
Additional municipal commissioner Ravindra Patil said, “We have cordoned off that section of the holding pond at Mini Seashore. Further inquiry is on regarding the structural audit and past maintenance.”
