Tirupur: Residents of Kangeyam seized two water tankers for drawing groundwater in the area for commercial purpose on Thursday.
They alleged that the overexploitation of groundwater was depleting the water table of the region. It could affect them in getting water for drinking purpose and daily use in summer, they said.
“We moved the Madras high court in 2015 against an AIADMK functionary who was exploiting the groundwater in the area. The court ordered the functionary to stop drawing groundwater in the area. But again, the functionary has started selling water extracted from borewells and farm wells in his farm. So, we captured two water tankers which were transporting water,” S Kathirvel, a protester, said.
Revenue officials seized both the lorries and took them to Kangeyam taluk office. The officials pacified the protesters by assuring that the Dharapuram revenue development officer would initiate enquiry and act.
