Long-simmering issues likely to weigh heavy on 15 lakh voters’ minds

The coastal road and the destruction it may cause, religious sentiments hurt due to the Metro 3 tunnel passing under Parsi fire temples, and eviction of residents of the Mumbai Port Trust land are some of the core issues that will play a key role in the in the Mumbai South constituency this election.

Sitting MP Arvind Sawant will contest against Milind Deora of the Congress, Dr. Anil Kumar of the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi and a few others as the city goes to polls on April 29. Spread from Colaba to Worli and up to Sewri, the Mumbai South constituency has nearly 15 lakh eligible voters.

“The tide this time will be to strengthen the Congress,” said Parvez Cooper, who was evicted from Mumbai Port Trust land in 2015. “I lost my livelihood when this government came to power. Do you think people like me will vote for them?” Mr. Cooper asked. “The eviction notices continue to flow in even today. Mr. Sawant has tried to help us, but our problems have not been solved.”

Mr. Cooper, who is Parsi, was also at the forefront of the protest against the Mumbai Metro 3 tunnels, which pass under two fire temples located near the Princess Street junction. “Shiv Sena had promised a lot, but nothing worked out there too,” he said.

Another Parsi community member, Viraf Kapadia, said he was extremely disappointed when the Sena simply backed out of all its tall promises. “We were told that Shiv Sena would step out to protest for the community and the cause of saving the fire temples. But nothing like that happened,” he said.

The coastal road is another issue that has been bothering south Mumbai residents, who have taken to the streets in protest on several occasions. According to Tardeo resident Dr. Nilesh Baxi, Mr. Sawant has not attended any residents’ meetings on the matter.

“No one explained what the coastal road was going to be like. The general understanding was that it will be like the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. But in reality, the coastal road is simply 172 acres of land reclamation,” Dr. Baxi said. He said the failures of all political leaders will eventually result in people choosing the None of the Above option.
