Cheese lovers have been warned to check their fridges after four popular French bries were pulled from the shelves over health fears.

The Adelaide-based Washed Rind Pty Ltd issued a recall of four of its washed mould cheeses due to a potential microbial listeria monocytogenes contamination.

The products, which all originate from France, have been available for sale at delis, cheeserooms, IGAs and independent stores across New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia.

Injesting the cheese could lead to a listeria infection, a rare but serious illness that can result in serious illnesses including meningitis and septicaemia.

Listeria is more likely to cause illness in pregnant women and their unborn babies, the elderly and people with low immune systems.

Listeria monocytogenes can infect the brain, spinal-cord membranes and the bloodstream.

Symptoms are usually described as ‘flu-like’, although fever and gastrointestinal symptoms can occur in pregnant women.
