A teenage girl has died after walking backwards and falling almost 15m from a roof while filming friends on her smartphone.

Iva Mamutovic fell from a rooftop in southeastern Serbia and died at the scene after landing on concrete.

The 19-year-old was filming two friends, Aleksandra (20) and Mihajlo (19), on the roof when she accidentally stepped back over the edge, according to local media.

Residents who heard screams rushed to the side of the young woman, who'd reportedly suffered horrific head injuries.

An ambulance was called but she was declared dead at the scene.

"I looked out of the window and saw a body," said a resident who didn't wish to be named.

"There was blood coming from her head. I immediately called an ambulance which arrived quickly. I saw a guy shouting: 'Iva, Iva . . . help, help!'."

Another neighbour added: "I heard cries for help. I didn’t know what was happening.

"I went out and saw my neighbour holding the head of a girl who was injured but still showing signs of life. I was stunned."

Iva didn't live in the building but one of the young men who was with her had previously lived there with his family, according to residents.

The young woman's family were too shocked to comment. Police are reportedly treating the incident as an accident.
