DHARWAD: The regional commissioner Belagavi has ordered the release of water from Naviluteertha Dam near Savadatti to Dharwad district to fill tanks and supply it for drinking purpose for six days from April 13.
Accordingly water will be released from Malaprabha Right Bank Canal from 6pm on Saturday. The water will be used to fill tanks in Navalgund, Hubballi and Kundgol taluks which are facing severe water crisis.
People and farmers in the command area have been strictly warned not to use this water for agriculture or any other purpose. Using irrigation pump sets is prohibited and legal action will be taken against violators, the regional commissioner has said in the order.
Prohibitory orders are clamped all-along the MRBC under CrPC Sec 144. All equipment including pump sets to draw water for agriculture or any other purpose will be seized.
As summer has set in, drinking water shortage has started to surface in various villages across the district. Many villagers are appealing the administration to supply water to cater to the needs of people and cattle.
Accordingly, the district administration had written to regional commissioner Tushar Girinath seeking release of water from Navilutheertha to fill tanks and ease the drinking water crisis.
