After undermining her as a political newbie, BJP North Mumbai unit has started taking Urmila Matondkar campaign seriously. Party nominee from North Mumbai constituency Gopal Shetty today for the first time admitted that actor turned politician is well versed in politics but unfortunately in a wrong party.
Shetty said that Congress has roped in Matondkar being a celebrity with a hope that it will attract voters. "Matondkar comes from a family with a political background. However, the party she has chosen is unfortunately wrong,'' he said.
However, Congress and Matondkar have downplayed Shetty's statement saying that he and BJP should worry about their own prospects instead of worrying about Matondkar in particular. Matondkar has stepped up campaign as she has been focusing on house to house contact, corner meetings and interaction with various groups.
The Mumbai Regional Congress Committee president and Congress party's South Mumbai constituency Milind Deora countered BJP's charges saying that Matondkar should not be branded as just a film star. He went on to add that Matondar is socially conscious artist with strong views about what is happening the society today.
Matondkar has received support from Rashtra Seva Dal, Janata Dal (secular) and other socialist organisations.
