MADURAI
A public interest litigation petition filed before the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Friday wanted the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to carry out excavation along the Tamirabharani in Thoothukudi district.
The petitioner, S. Kamaraj of Thoothukudi, claimed that British archaeologist Alexander Rea had identified 37 places over a hundred years ago, just like the Adichanallur site, to be of historic importance. He said if excavations were carried out along the banks of the Tamirabharani as per the identification made by Alexander Rea, it could unearth an ancient civilisation.
Taking into account the prayer sought in the petition, a Division Bench of Justices N. Kirubakaran and S. S. Sundar ordered notice the ASI and the State Department of Archaeology. The case was posted along with the other connected archaeological matters and adjourned till April 22 for further hearing.
