Church converted into a spacious five-bedroom home up for sale for less than $450,000 - but it comes with a spooky catch

  • It comes with a cemetery which the new owner is required to take care of
  • The home in Bracknell, Tasmania was formerly the Uniting Church built in 1922
  • The property features locally sourced timber and double lock-up garages

A spacious five-bedroom home is on the market for less than $450,000, but it comes with an unusual backyard that will require more maintenance than most.

The home at 6 Amelia Street in Bracknell, Tasmania was formerly the Uniting Church, and was built in 1922.

The outside of the church was in disrepair and the inside needed work but the current owners managed to bring it back from the dead.

Lucy and Russell Poulton restored the old church and transformed it into an open-plan home with five bedrooms and one bathroom using stunning locally sourced timber.

There wasn't much they could change about the yard though, as it contains the remains of townspeople who died decades earlier.

The new owner of the home would be required to take care of the graveyard and maintain the grounds since they are an extension to the home's grounds.

The Poultons originally purchased the home for $75,450 in 2004 but the extensive renovations value the home at over $420,000.

The Poultons saw the home 15 years ago and though it needed lots of work, they fell in love with it.

'We were looking to buy or build and we saw the outside of it – and the graveyard – and it was quite decrepit,' Ms Poulton said to All Homes

'But then we looked inside and saw the timbers and things and thought it would be great.'

Ms Poulton said the small country town of Bracknell is perfect for a family and it's not far from the metropolitan area.

'It's a great place for kids – they can walk to the local school, there's a swimming hole and it has a shop and post office and all those things.'
