Two people, dog escape burning yacht near Moreton Island

A man, woman and dog have been rescued from a burning yacht in Moreton Bay by a passing sailor.

The fire was reported about 5.30am on Friday and the vessel was south-west of Moreton Island.

Volunteer Marine Rescue Bribie Island radio operator Stewart Bell said he heard the first report of the fire radioed in by a yacht nearby.

He passed the information onto water police who responded, but Mr Bell said the nearby yachtie who spotted the flames came and rescued the two people and their pet.

A fire service spokesman said firefighters hitched a ride on a water police vessel out to the yacht, estimated to be 30 feet long, about 7.30am.

The yacht was mostly a smouldering wreck when fire crews arrived but they extinguished the last of the flames and left just before 8am.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said the man, aged in his 60s, and woman, aged in her 50s, were plucked from the yacht and assessed by paramedics at the Port of Brisbane.

They were suffering from smoke inhalation but did not need to go to hospital.
