Harassed by local goon, 20-year-old hangs self

Kanpur: A 20-year-old girl allegedly hanged herself after being harassed by a local goon in Ghatampur area of Kanpur on Thursday night. The goon had threatened to kill the girl and her elder sister on latter’s marriage day.
The victim’s parents said their elder daughter’s wedding was to be solemnised on May 17. The girls had been facing continuous harassment from a local goon Jitu, who used to stalk them, said the parents.

The family said, “Jitu from the neighbourhood used to stalk our daughters and threaten of killing them if they married someone else. My younger daughter was depressed due to the continuous harassment and resorted to the extreme step.” He had also threatened the elder sister’s in-laws on phone.

“The family alleged that Jitu was forcing them for an affair with him but they had been resisting his advances,” said inspector Ghatampur Harmeet Singh. The girls’ parents, on Thursday evening, had even lodged an FIR at Ghatampur police station in this regard. “As per the sources, when Jitu came to know about the complaint he along with his aides allegedly barged into the girls’ house on Thursday evening. The girl was alone in the house as her elder sister had gone for shopping with her parents. He threatened to abduct and kill her and her sister. Later, the girl locked herself in her room and hanged from a log fixed in the ceiling. On returning, her parents and sister found her hanging and alerted the neighbours. The girl was immediately rushed to nearby community health centre where doctors pronounced her dead on arrival,” said the police.
