One person has been killed in a microlight crash at the Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport.

The aircraft came down at the famous course, which has hosted 10 Open Championships, at about 19:00 BST.

Merseyside Police said officers "dealing with a microlight aircraft crash" extinguished a fire, and one person had been pronounced dead at the scene.

Road closures were put in place in the area, including on Coastal Road.

"We are still establishing the facts and the identity of the person and inquiries are ongoing," a force spokesman added.
