Perumbakkam residents have requested the Kancheepuram District Collectorate to take action against sewage-tanker operators who discharge sewage into vacant plots in Perumbakkam.
The residents allege that drivers let sewage into vacant plots Indira Priyadarshini Nagar, particularly First Main Road. Almost every morning, before sunrise, one can see truck drivers pumping out sewage from tankers into vacant plots on the road, say residents.
As there is luxuriant growth of thorny bushes in these plots, the sewage that has been let into them is not always strikingly noticeable.
However, they can make no mistake about what is there in these plots – the stench is too overpowering for them to ignore it.
Residents say the stench leaves them with no option but to keep the windows closed even during the day.
K. Sarangadass, convener, Perumbakkam Federation of Associations, says, “ We have complained to the authorities concerned at the Perumbakkam First Grade Village Panchayat office and at S10 Pallikaranai Police Station. But, there has not been any relief.”
“During the rainy season, the discharged sewage can flood nearby residential localities which include Gurudev Colony and Shanthi Nagar. The drivers, after collecting the loads from commercial establishments, companies and apartments and independent houses, should transport it to the sewage treatment plant located on Corporation Road, Perungudi.”
The residents also point out that all kinds of waste, including construction debris, are dumped in the vacant plots, making the situation worse.
