PUNE: City-based NGO ‘Swachh Pune Swachh Bharat’ is approaching colleges in the city for the youths to contribute towards cleaning and beautification activities, which take place on Sunday every week.

The NGO is keen on making - SWAG - Swachh Warriors and Guards Club, so that a mega event of cleanliness and beautification can be taken on October 2, which will be marked as the 6th year of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan.

On October 2, 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan with an aim to clean up roads, streets and other public places, both in urban and rural areas. Similarly, Puneet Sharma, who is a Wing Commander, started a Facebook campaign ‘Swachh Pune Swachh Bharat’, urging his friends to join him in the endeavour to clean and beautify the city with public participation.

Puneet and his team conducted their first event at the Pune railway station on October 12, 2014. They have continued with the activity of cleaning and beautifying, which takes place every Sunday.

Since this year, October 2 will be celebrated as the sixth year of Abhiyaan. Similarly, it will be the sixth anniversary of the Swachh Pune Swachh Bharat as well. Puneet is approaching colleges in the city so that a SWAG Club can be formed, which will have all youngsters from these colleges. They can participate in the mega event.

Puneet told Sakal Times, “Since the city has nearly 700 colleges, we have started approaching them so that a SWAG group can be created. They can at least try to keep the premises of their college clean and request other people as well from trying to pollute the environment.”
