Nagpur: Two teachers returning from election duty were killed when the vehicle they were travelling in met with an accident on Umred road in the wee hours of Friday. Two other teachers travelling in the same car were injured in the accident near Champa village, about 30km from city.

The dead have been identified as Mukesh Mendhule, 39, and Pundalik Bahe, 55, while Narendra Pipre and Vijay Bahurupi sustained serious injuries. According to police, all teach at a government school in Umred. They were returning in a car belonging to Pipre from Hingna in Nagpur city after completing election duty on Friday. Pipre was driving the car while Mendhule was on seat next to him.

Cops believe Pipre might have dozed off and lost control of the car which hit a roadside tree. They also believe that Pipre might have tried to dodge another vehicle coming from the opposite direction and lost control. It is learnt that the car ran over 100 metres off the road before hitting the tree.

A police vehicle in which PI of Kuhi police station Panjaab Parghane was returning from election duty saw the damaged car of Pipre. Parghane stopped and extricated the injured and took them to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in city.

The police had also called 108 ambulance service but it reached way too late for help. Mendhule had died on spot while Bahe succumbed to his injuries at GMCH. The other two are currently being treated at GMCH. Kuhi police have registered a case of rash driving and death due to negligence against Pipre.
