The District Election Office, Mumbai (suburban), will be tying up with Adani Electricity Mumbai Limited (AEML) to encourage voters to participate in the Lok Sabha elections.
Customers of the power distribution company will have messages behind their electricity bills urging them to cast their vote on April 29.
“A large percentage of the voter base in the Mumbai suburban region comprises customers of Adani Electricity. By using electricity bills we will manage to reach several households in one shot,” said Sachin Kurve, District Collector and District Election Officer, Mumbai (Suburban).
AEML has approximately 30 lakh customers, which include residential, industrial and commercial. ‘Cast your vote and serve the nation. Fulfil your responsibility and national duty,’ will be printed on the back of the next billing cycle in English, Hindi and Marathi. The initiative of the Mumbai Suburban District Collector’s office is part of the Systematic Voters Education and Electoral Participation programme initiated by the Election Commission of India.
Mumbai suburban district has nearly 70 lakh eligible voters spread across 15 lakh households. Typically, 1.5 to 2 lakh bills are dispatched every day, depending on the billing cycles, and officials hope by April 29, the message will reach nearly all households.
The messages are expected to be printed in the bills in the next few weeks. Sources in the collectorate said they are in talks with the company to use their customer database to send out text messages to all its customers in the run-up to the election date.
An AEML spokesperson said, “We are pleased to join the Mumbai Suburban District Collector’s Office to spread awareness of the importance of voting in the elections. We appeal to all our customers, employees, and the citizens to come out in large numbers and cast their vote.”
