Ludhiana: The police on Wednesday claimed to have arrested a drug peddler after Rs 3-crore heroin was found on him on Rahon Road.
Sooraj Pratap Singh, 22, a former gym trainer and resident of Kali Sadak in Salem Tabri, was nabbed on a tip-off.
The Special Task Force (STF), Ludhiana unit, had set up a checkpost at Khwajke T-point on Rahon Road on Tuesday night. “The police party stopped Sooraj’s bike and during checking, 550 grams of heroin was recovered from his bag. The contraband is worth Rs 3 crore in international market,” said Ludhiana STF in-charge inspector Harbans Singh.
Besides peddling drugs, Sooraj, who hails from Patiala, was financing drug smugglers.
“This is perhaps for the first time police have nabbed a peddler who was also financing drug smugglers. Sooraj was a gym trainer one-and-a-half-year ago. During interrogation, he revealed that after he became friends with some of his gym customers, they introduced him to drugs. As he got hooked to heroin, he started financing drug smugglers a year ago. Sooraj started peddling drugs about eight months ago,” the inspector added.
Sooraj used to procure drugs from Bablu, also a resident of Kali Sadak. “It is suspected that Bablu purchased heroin from outside Ludhiana. The police are on his trail. Sooraj has given names of nearly 10 smugglers to whom he gave money on interest to run the trade. They, too, are on police radar.”
