Residents here will have to continue carrying for another month cap, umbrella, water bottle, or any such thing that will help them beat the heat as the temperature experienced in the past few days is expected to continue.

The day temperature on April 7, 8 and 9 was 37.5 degree C, the highest for the year.

The temperature might touch 38 degree C in the next few days and would remain so till mid-May, S.P. Ramanathan, Professor and Head, Agro Climate Research Centre (ACRC), Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, said here on Wednesday.

Though the decadal average of day temperature for April for 2011-19 was 35.5 degree C, higher by 0.2 degree C compared to the previous decade, the residents continued to experience more because of the increase in night temperature.

The night temperature for April had steadily increased from 23.1 degree C in 1981-90 to 23.4 in 1991-2000 to 23.7 in 2001-10 to 24.4 in 2011-19, Mr. Ramanathan said and added that this was the reason for people experiencing sultry weather.

The absence of rain in March this year was also a contributing factor, he pointed out and said that the ACRC predicted 90 – 90 mm rain in five rainy days during April and May.

A day that sees more than 2.50 mm rainfall is taken as a rainy day.

The residents would continue to experience high temperature and sultry weather till May 15 when the cloud cover preceding the South West Monsoon was expected to provide some relief.
