Perth high school released from lockdown as TRG investigates 'gunshot' noise
Students in at a high school in perth's east have been allowed to go home after they were put in lockdown due to a nearby police investigation.
Kelmscott Senior High School was put in lockdown after a member of the public called police just after 2pm.
They said they had heard what sounded like a firearm being discharged in the backyard of a Kelmscott area.
Students were slowly released via the school oval just after 3.20pm.
Witness and resident Gemma told Radio 6PR she first received a text message about the incident from her daughter, who goes to the local high school.
"I live literally a hundred metres up from the school, so I walked out and there was police blocking off the end of the street," she said.
"Our street was just chaos, there were cars everywhere and people wondering what was going on.
"[When I got the text] I freaked out, jumped up and pretty much came outside to see that, so I freaked out even more.
"Then I received a text message from the actual school itself saying that there had been a lockdown, and an incident outside of school.
"I felt a little bit more relieved hearing that."
Due to how close the family lived to the highschool, Gemma said her son had become worried about his mum.
"My son was alright in the school because they controlled it pretty well and making sure that they were all calm," she said.
"But he was freaking out more about what was going on outside and worried about me."
Gemma's son said his teacher successfully kept his year-seven class calm.
"It was pretty frantic. Everything was crazy," he said.
"[My teacher] said to stay calm, to lock the door and stuff and that it's outside of the school, not inside of the school, so it should be alright."
Another witness told Radio 6PR he was waiting for his son when he was told the school wouldn’t be letting children leave the grounds until police gave the green light.
“From the looks of it we might be here quite awhile,” he said.
“They haven't said anything. I can hear some dogs so it sounds like they're bringing in dogs now.
“[I'm] a little bit nervous. I suppose they're just doing their job but there's a lot of man power down here, and people everywhere.
“You just don't know. That's the problem, you just don't know what's happening or how serious it is or what – but it's looking pretty serious.”
An area bound by Cammillo Road, Third Avenue and Railway Avenue was closed off to the public as the Tactical Response Group investigated.
Officers were seen gaining entry to a home on Slee Avenue, and searching the backyard.
It is unclear at this stage if they have located anyone of interest.
