Tension prevailed at the railway marshalling yard at Kathrikadavu after a few low intensity explosives were found abandoned in a train coach on Wednesday evening.
The ball-shaped explosives were found in a coach of the Mangala Lakshadweep Express (12618) operating from Delhi Hazrat Nizamuddin to Ernakulam Junction.
The train had completed the service at the junction around 12.30 p.m. and was moved to the marshalling yard for cleaning. It was the cleaning staff who found the abandoned bag containing the unidentified item.
βA cleaning staffer took it outside the coach and tried to break one of them with a stone when it burst with low intensity, inflicting minor injuries on his fingers. Though it happened in the afternoon, the cleaning staff who were petrified did not reveal it to the authorities till around 5.45 p.m,β said Railway Police Force (RPF) sources.
Shortly, RPF and Railway Police officials rushed to the spot and examined the explosives. βIt is suspected to be either pig crackers or such other related stuff capable of very low intensity bursts,β RPF sources said.
The explosives were moved to a secured place shortly thereafter.
