Voting in the first phase of 2019 Lok Sabha elections began at 7:00 am on Thursday, 11 April. 18 constituencies across the ‘Hindi heartland’ – including those in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Uttarakhand and Chhattisgarh – are casting their ballot today.

Polling at booth number 158 in UP's Saharanpur halted due to faulty Electronic Voting Machine (EVM), reported ANI.

A total of 91 of the 543 Lok Sabha constituencies are voting in the first phase of polling.

  • Eighteen out of 91 constituencies voting today are from the Hindi heartland
  • Eight seats in western UP and five in Bihar are polling today
  • Chhattisgarh’s Bastar is the lone constituency from the state to vote today
  • Union Ministers VK Singh and Mahesh Sharma are in the fray as BJP candidates from Ghaziabad and Gautam Buddh Nagar respectively
  • Former Bihar CM Jitan Ram Manjhi and LJP leader Chirag Paswan are also contesting in the first phase
